Dear ETO Supporter, During our last update you may remember we were able to positively inform you that the rains had returned and that the ETO Shamba / Farm was progressing well with healthy crops starting to grow.  Unfortunately I now have to report that these crops have been totally wiped out by a plague of locusts that have been invading a number of east African countries including Kenya The shocking pictures below show the scale of the worst outbreak of desert locusts in Kenya in 70 years as hundreds of millions of the insects leave devastation in their wake (including our own ETO Farm in Ruungu, Tharaka Kenya).  Pictures from Daily Nation, Kenya The locusts - a lethal species of the grasshopper family eat every green matter in its sight and have the potential to knock down seasons of food, prompting acute hunger and substantially slow down the economy that is dependent on agriculture.  The pictures below taken from our very own Shamba / Farm show the devastation locusts cause as our once healthy crops have been wiped out. Before After Before After Even a small swarm of the insects can consume enough food for 35,000 people in a single day.   A single swarm can contain up to 150 million locusts per square kilometer of farmlandm an area the size of almost 250 million football field.  The locusts are moving steadily towards Ethiopia's Rift valley, the breadbasket for Africa's second most populous country.  Migrating with the wind, the locusts can cover up to 93 miles in a single day.
